Itinerary

Day-by-Day Plan

Xining/Lanzhou in and out. Grand loop with no backtracking — different landscapes every day. ⚠️ Foreign guest restricted areas (Delingha/Dachaidan/Water Yadan) have been circumvented.

DAY 1
Arrive Xining/Lanzhou
Airport/train station pickup → Check in → Free time. Your concierge walks you through the entire itinerary — every day, every hotel, every drive segment, confirmed line by line. Xining sits at 2,200m — tonight is your body's adaptation window.
DAY 2
Qinghai Lake · Chaka Salt Lake
Xining → Qinghai Lake Erlangjian → Chaka Salt Lake → Wulan. Qinghai Lake's blue peaks in June–August — rapeseed flowers + sapphire water, every shot is wallpaper-worthy. Chaka "Mirror of the Sky" — wear a red dress for the best reflection photos in the lake.
DAY 3
Qarhan Salt Lake · 56x Larger Than Chaka
Wulan → Qarhan Salt Lake → Golmud. This is why we don't head straight to Dunhuang after Chaka — Qarhan Salt Lake is 56 times the size of Chaka, with far fewer people and even greener water. BYD built a highway across the salt lake — driving on salt with emerald water on both sides.
DAY 4
Crossing the Qaidam · Arrive Dunhuang
Golmud → Aksei Oil Town → Dunhuang. Today's drive is longest (~5–6 hours), but crossing the Qaidam Basin is a landscape in itself — Gobi, yardang formations, the vastness of uninhabited land. Aksei Oil Town was a filming location for Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe — surreal ruins.
DAY 5
Dunhuang · Desert & Millennia-Old Murals
Mingsha Mountain Crescent Spring (morning, before the heat) → Mogao Caves → Dunhuang. Camel rides and sand sliding at Mingsha — go in the morning to beat the heat. Mogao Caves: 8 grottoes (Class A ticket), a guide takes you through thousand-year-old murals — the colors are still so vivid it's hard to believe. Evening: Shazhou Night Market for barbecue.
DAY 6
Jiayuguan · Rainbow Danxia
Dunhuang → Jiayuguan (pass by, exterior view) → Zhangye Rainbow Danxia → Zhangye. Danxia is most beautiful an hour before sunset — warm light hitting the red-and-yellow striped mountains, like the earth's own color palette. Jiayuguan: exterior view is enough — going inside involves too much walking and the ticket isn't cheap.
DAY 7
Qilian Grasslands · Return to Xining
Zhangye → Biandukou → Qilian Grasslands → Daban Mountain → Xining. The final day crosses back from Gansu to Qinghai — Qilian Grasslands in June–August are as green as a Windows desktop wallpaper. From Daban Mountain Pass, gaze at Gangshiqia Snow Mountain — still with patches of snow in summer.
DAY 8
Departure
Wake up naturally → Airport drop-off. Your concierge confirms your next flight time and sees you through to security.

Vehicle & Hotel

The Northwest is vast and sparsely populated — your vehicle and hotel matter even more than in coastal destinations.

🚗
Fully Licensed 7-Seater Business Vehicle
Brand-owned, self-dispatched, self-inspected. The grand loop covers ~2,200km — vehicle condition is critical. Our vehicles are serviced every 5,000km; our driver-guides know every stretch of Gobi highway and every gas station.

Vehicle sizing guide: 4 pax → 7-seater / 6 pax → 9-seater / 10 pax → ≥17-seat minibus. The Northwest has long drives — space matters. 4 people in a 7-seater means everyone gets a window.
🏨
Highly-Rated 4-Diamond Minimum
Honestly, Northwest accommodations are simpler than coastal China — but we select only the local best. Hotel names provided before departure — that is your final hotel. You can verify by calling yourself.

Xining/Dunhuang/Zhangye have good conditions; Wulan and Golmud are basic but clean — hot water and WiFi included. Competitors promise "5-star throughout" → you arrive in Wulan to find their "5-star" is a local guesthouse. We don't lie — what's there is what we tell you.
Why This Way

Itinerary Design Logic

Not a random collection of sights — every pacing decision has a reason.

Why Qarhan instead of just Chaka?
Chaka Salt Lake has become over-commercialized — peak season means queuing 1 hour just to enter the parking lot, another 40 minutes for the train, and the lake is packed with people. A Xiaohongshu post with 3,933 likes said "Chaka is the least worthwhile stop." Qarhan Salt Lake is 56 times the size of Chaka — fewer people, greener water, no queues for photos. We do both Chaka + Qarhan dual salt lakes: Chaka for the "Mirror of the Sky" reflection experience, Qarhan for the truly spectacular salt lake industrial landscape. It's not Chaka or Qarhan — it's both.
Why not go via Delingha/Dachaidan? (Honest disclosure on foreign guest restrictions)
Foreign passport holders (including Singapore/Malaysia) cannot stay overnight in Delingha or Dachaidan in Qinghai; Water Yadan and Dachaidan Emerald Lake are off-limits. This is a public security regulation, not our choice. Why can competitors go? Because they serve Chinese ID holders — foreign guests would be refused accommodation and ticket purchase upon arrival. We're honest with you: those areas are inaccessible. We substitute Qarhan Salt Lake for Emerald Lake and avoid the Delingha route. Your experience is not compromised — Qarhan is more震撼 than Emerald Lake.
Can Mogao Caves tickets be guaranteed?
During peak season, Class A tickets (8 caves) are limited to 6,000 per day — booking opens 30 days in advance. Your concierge will attempt to secure tickets the moment you confirm your itinerary. Success rate in peak season is about 80%. If Class A is unavailable — Class B tickets cover 4 core grottoes, the experience is still excellent, and the price difference is refunded. Your concierge will inform you of the ticket outcome before departure — we won't wait until you're in Dunhuang to say there are no tickets. We don't sell scalped tickets — if we can't get them, we can't get them.
Aren't Qinghai Lake + Chaka + Qarhan three salt lakes redundant?
They're completely different. Qinghai Lake is a freshwater lake — blue waters + rapeseed flowers + distant mountains, the feeling of a highland sea. Chaka is a white salt lake — the "Mirror of the Sky" reflection effect. Qarhan is a green salt lake — BYD's highway cutting through, water like jade. Three bodies of water, three colors, three landscapes, three completely different experiences — your photos will be three distinct color palettes. One per day, perfectly paced.
Northwest Pitfalls

What You'll Encounter with Competitors

Every item below comes from real Xiaohongshu feedback. More likes = more people got burned.

"Guide claims to be 'family fleet cousin' → actually outsourced by 'XX National Travel'"
→ Our Approach
Brand direct, no subcontracting. All driver-guides are selected, trained, and paid by the brand. The contracting entity matches our business license — you're not finding a "cousin" on Xiaohongshu who then resells you. Any issue, you only talk to one concierge — no ping-pong between different companies.
"Heavy snow blocking the road, threatened with 'believe it or not I'll dump you here' → two travel agencies kicking responsibility back and forth"
→ Our Approach
One team fully accountable. Road closures, weather, vehicle issues — you only need to contact your concierge. She coordinates driver-guides, hotels, and alternative routes. You don't make a single phone call. No two companies playing ping-pong — because it's always been just us.
"Don't sign the contract on arrival! Don't buy the ¥160 personal insurance!"
→ Our Approach
PDF electronic contract sent before departure — you review, verify, and confirm from Singapore/Malaysia first. On arrival, sign the paper version — identical clause by clause to the electronic one. 500K RMB travel accident insurance included free — no extra insurance to buy. No "surprise surcharges after boarding" tricks.
"Chaka is the least worthwhile stop — 7 hours to Qarhan + 20 min shuttle bus"
→ Our Approach
We do Chaka + Qarhan dual salt lakes — Chaka because you genuinely want the "Mirror of the Sky" reflection experience, Qarhan because it's 56x larger, less crowded, and greener. Not one or the other — both. And our drive from Wulan to Qarhan is reasonable — no 7-hour rush.
Who's Done This Route
Guest at Qarhan Salt Lake Guest at Dunhuang Mogao Caves
July 2025 · Malaysia · Mother & Daughter
"My mom is 64 — she was worried about the altitude. Turned out completely fine — the concierge checked our blood oxygen every day, oxygen was ready but never used. Qarhan Salt Lake was way more震撼 than what I'd seen of Chaka on Xiaohongshu — you're literally driving on salt. When the Mogao Caves guide said the bodhisattva's eyes seemed to be looking right at you, my mom's eyes welled up. This trip is worth a lifetime of memories."

FAQ

About This Route

Is the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop high altitude? Will I get altitude sickness?
Qinghai section is higher: Xining 2,200m, Qinghai Lake 3,200m, Wulan 3,000m, Golmud 2,800m. Gansu section: Dunhuang 1,100m, Zhangye 1,500m — essentially no reaction. Most overseas Chinese adapt fine. The itinerary ascends gradually from Xining, giving your body time to adjust. Your concierge checks blood oxygen daily and carries oxygen and glucose — no need to worry.
What are the accommodation conditions in the Northwest?
Honestly: simpler than coastal China. Xining, Dunhuang, and Zhangye 4-diamond hotels are comfortable — clean, hot water, WiFi. Wulan and Golmud are more basic but clean and comfortable — don't expect the Ritz-Carlton, but you'll be in the local best. Hotel names are sent before departure — you can look up reviews yourself.
Are there extra restrictions for overseas Chinese in the Northwest?
Yes. Foreign passport holders cannot stay overnight in Qinghai's Delingha or Dachaidan; Water Yadan and Dachaidan Emerald Lake are off-limits. This is a public security regulation, not our choice. Our itinerary has already circumvented these — Qarhan Salt Lake replaces Emerald Lake, Delingha route avoided. No impact on your experience. No restrictions in the Gansu section.
How do I book Mogao Caves tickets?
Your concierge attempts to secure tickets the moment you confirm your itinerary. During peak season, Class A tickets (8 caves) are limited to 6,000/day, released 30 days in advance — July–August is highly competitive. If Class A is unavailable → Class B tickets (4 caves) still cover core grottoes, price difference refunded. Your concierge informs you of the outcome before departure — we won't wait until Dunhuang to say there are no tickets.
Are meals included? How do we handle food?
Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner not included — your concierge recommends local-favorite restaurants. Qinghai: hand-pulled lamb, yak yogurt, noodle sheets; Dunhuang: donkey meat yellow noodles, lamb braised in pastry; Zhangye: cuo fish noodles. Northwest beef and lamb are outstanding — the lamb in Singapore doesn't compare. Average SGD 8–12 per day eats very well.
Are the drives long? Will it be too tiring?
The Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop does involve significant driving — ~2,200km total. But daily distances are kept reasonable: D2–D3 ~3–4 hours, D4 longest at ~5–6 hours, D5–D7 ~3–4 hours. D4 crossing the Qaidam Basin is a landscape in itself — Gobi, yardang, uninhabited terrain, you won't be bored. The 7-seater business vehicle has plenty of space — nap when you're tired. This is not a bus tour doing 10 hours a day.
